A plugin extends the capabilities of WordPress with new features. The safest way to install a plugin is through the built-in admin dashboard on your website. This ensures you get the latest version of the official plugin. It is also possible to upload a plugin or manually install a plugin through the file system, but those are for developers and advanced scenarios.
Other options
There are other ways to install a plugin:
Instructions
- Sign into your WordPress admin account
- From the side menu, select Plugins > Add Plugin
- Enter the name of the plugin in the search box and hit enter
- Carefully confirm you have found the right plugin
Don’t click Install Now just yet. It is better to slow down.
- Click More Details or the title of the plugin
A popup window with plugin details will appear.
- Review the details carefully
Now is the time to carefully review the plugin. Check the reviews, visit their website, scan their support forum, etc.
- Click Install Now
- Click Activate
By default, a plugin is not activated (it is not actively running). You must activate the plugin when you are ready to start using it. You can later deactivate the plugin without uninstalling if you need to temporarily disable it.
- Look for your plugin at Plugins > Installed Plugins
- Click Settings (if applicable)
Many plugins require subsequent configuration before they are fully functional. Look for Settings under the plugin name. You should then be able to do any post-installation configuration.
